nuvifone to cost $299 with 2-yr service deal
Sept 29 (Reuters) – Wireless carrier AT&T (T.N) and navigation device maker Garmin (GRMN.O) said the G60 nuvifone will be available beginning Oct. 4 to AT&T customers in the U.S. at AT&T stores and online from the carrier’s website.
The nuvifone G60 will be sold for $299 with a two-year service agreement after a $100 mail-in-rebate, the companies said in a statement. G60, built in partnership with Taiwanese PC maker Asustek (2357.TW), runs on a Linux-based operating system.

It doesn’t exactly rival Moore’s Law, but Apple has doubled the number of iPhone apps downloaded in about half the time it took to reach 1 billion. But unlike the fanfare which attended the one billion mark, we don’t know who did the two billionth download or what the app was — and this time nobody wins anything.
 iPhone Apps
Apple announced Monday in a brief press release that it the 2 billionth iPhone app had been downloaded. It didn’t say when, exactly, but it’s a little more than five months since the 1 billionth was retrieved from the iTunes Store cloud. And that was nine months after what is now the largest application store in the world first opened its virtual doors.
On that occasion, April 24, we learned that 13-year-old Connor Mulcahey of Weston, Connecticut had downloaded the billionth application, earning him tens of thousands of dollars in Apple hardware and software and the developer of the app, Bump Technology, a guaranteed spot in the next edition of Trivial Pursuit.
We asked Apple about the who’s and what’s of the two billionth transaction, but they replied that they were not going beyond the release. So all we know is that they’ve reached another milestone, and that download activity continues to grow. A lot. “The rate of App Store downloads continues to accelerate with users downloading a staggering two billion apps in just over a year, including more than half a billion apps this quarter alone,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO, in the four-paragraph statement.
The iPhone has been a boon to third-party developer/entrepreneurs, introducing opportunities to design a type of software that didn’t exist even two years ago to a covetous customer base of more than 50 million and counting.
But for every tale of overnight riches there seems to be another of an app denied for reasons that, at best, are not entirely clear — such as the approval of an MLB video app that does work on AT&T’s 3G data network while a streaming video app from Sling Media was restricted only to WiFi hotspots. Apple’s decision to reject Google Voice — or, has it? — drew the unwelcome attention of the FCC, which is trying to find out from Apple, AT&T and Google what’s going on.
On the bright side there are now 85,000 apps to choose from, and no end in site, which means the biggest problem for iPhone owners now is keeping up with what may be available and of personal interest amid the vast array of offerings . ITunes, in fact, just released a new version that extends the “Genius” concept that helped sell more music to apps — so it’s anybody’s guess if Apple will reach the three billion mark in, say 2-3 months.

While some of you have undoubtedly been wearing out your mouse or trackpad buttons clicking “Check for Update” in iTunes all morning, we know that most of you have probably patiently been waiting for the AT&T MMS update for your iPhone. Wait no more, as the carrier update appears to have arrived a few hours earlier than planned: just pop into iTunes with your iPhone plugged in, check for updates if it doesn’t automatically notify you, and you’re on your way to MMS bliss.
 iTunes Update
AT&T had warned us earlier this week that the MMS rollout would require a carrier profile (IPCC) update before it would work for everyone. Though some lucky users managed to enable this feature early, most of us were stuck waiting until today.
We don’t really have much else to say about it at this point, so go ahead and download it, reboot, and if you’re in the mood, let us know what the first picture (or video) you received was. (Finally, iPhone users in the US can start sexting one another again with pics to back it up. Seriously though, The iPhone displays the images you have received even if your phone is locked, so be careful about those inappropriate photos if there are kids or other sensitive people around!)

Dr. Cell Phone Working on Unlocking iPhone 3.1
AT&T is on track to flip the switch to enable MMS functionality for U.S. iPhone users this Friday. The wireless carrier said that all users should be able to send and receive MMS messages by Friday afternoon.
Though considered one of the most advanced smartphones to date, the iPhone has been lacking a basic feature (in the U.S.) found on many other handsets — MMS. But AT&T is finally ready to roll out MMS this Friday, after increasing criticism from unsatisfied iPhone users.
AT&T announced on their Facebook page that late Friday morning Pacific Time, or Friday afternoon for the rest of the country, is the time to fire up iTunes and connect your iPhone. You will have to download an updated carrier profile and sync it to your iPhone in order to have the MMS feature enabled. This will be the only way to enable MMS on your iPhone.
AT&T rushed to beef up their infrastructure over the last few months, in order to support the new MMS feature Apple unveiled in June, and now the wireless carrier is nervous about the launch, according to DSLReports.
The story quotes insiders involved with AT&T saying the early testing of the iPhone MMS feature “has been a little rocky” and a 40 percent increase in network traffic is expected on Friday, as many iPhone users will start toying with the new feature and send pictures and videos to each other.
AT&T’s early testing of the MMS feature on the iPhone could also be an explanation of reports last week from a few lucky users that upgraded to the iPhone 3.1 OS and were suddenly able to send and receive MMS messages.
The capability to send and receive photos, videos, audio files, and contact info through the iPhone Messages app was introduced by Apple in June this year via the 3.0 software update. However, AT&T was late in the game at enabling this feature, although most carriers around the world did this throughout the summer.

A number of iPhone Atlas readers, and numerous more on Apple’s Discussion boards, have reported a bevy of problems–some large, some small–after upgrading to iPhone OS 3.1. The following two procedures work to solve a number of the reported problems:
- Reset your iPhone by holding down the sleep and home buttons until the Apple logo appears.
- Restore your iPhone: In iTunes, click the Restore button under the Summary tab. Restoring the phone will erase contacts, calendars, photos, and other data on the phone, but will restore automatically backed-up information including text messages, notes, call history, contact favorites, sound settings, widget settings, etc. Of course, make sure that you back up your phone before restoring.

However, some issues–chronicled below–persist:
Podcasts are listed in random order for some users who are complaining that podcast episodes are not being displayed properly by date. We encountered this problem in one out of seven podcasts on a test iPhone 3GS. This bug has been confirmed by Apple, so look for a fix in a future firmware update.
Random freezes or shutdowns are a major complaint for users after upgrading. The problem is the source of heated discussions within a huge Apple discussion threadcontaining nearly 900 posts. The problem seems to manifest itself whenever the iPhone goes to sleep, the user locks the display, or just randomly. When the user next tries to use the phone, he or she will find it completely unresponsive–the display remains blank and pressing buttons won’t wake it. The only recourse for the user is to perform a reset as described above.
Battery life is another major complaint for users after upgrading and one we’ve encountered ourselves. So far, none of the usual fixes have resolved a problem some are claiming happens even when the iPhone is idle. Regardless, we’ve noticed on our own iPhone 3GS that battery life is significantly poorer after upgrading to iPhone OS 3.1. It isn’t unusual to commute home at the end of the day with 25 percent or less battery life.
Apple is clearly aware of the battery problem and actively trying to resolve it by engaging iPhone users in a study. Participating users will receive a special BatteryLifeLogging.mobilecongfigfile that will capture Powerlog files from the iPhone when syncing with iTunes. The user sends the log files to Apple via e-mail or http://bugreport.apple.com. Hopefully with enough input, Apple will find the root cause of this problem and issue a fix in a future firmware update.
In the meantime, we suggest that you look at our guide to getting the most out of your iPhone battery for suggestions on improving battery life.
Slow or sluggish performance is a complaint from some users who are blaming the problem on MobileMe syncing. According to a post by Skid on the Apple forums, you can resolve the issue by performing these steps:
1. Launch the Settings App
2. Go to Mail, Contacts, Calendars
3. Go to your MobileMe account
4. Turn off contacts and calendars
5. When prompted delete them from your iPhone
6. Reset your iPhone by holding down the sleep and home buttons until the Apple logo appears.
7. Perform steps 1-5 but this time turn contacts and calendar syncing on.
If the above steps do not resolve the problem, another alternative is to delete your MobileMe account from your iPhone, perform a reset, and set up your MobileMe account from scratch.
Unknown error (-50) was an error we encountered when syncing from iPhoto to our iPhone 3GS on another computer. According to Apple, all we needed to do was sync using iTunes 9, which we had not installed on the second computer. After upgrading to iTunes 9 the problem disappeared.
 iTunes Error
A problem with Exchange is a source of complaints about the OS 3.1 upgrade manifested by 2G and 3G iPhone models failing to connect to Exchange 2007. Details about the issue can be found in Apple explains iPhone OS 3.1 Exchange changes.
Bricked iPhones caused by the OS 3.1 upgrade failing to apply was a source of complaints by some unhappy iPhone users. Fortunately, there is a fix for most “bricking” incidents using the following steps to do a factory restore of your iPhone:
1. Press and hold Sleep/Wake and Home until the iPhone resets.
2. When the Apple logo appears release Sleep/Wake, but do not release Home until you see the prompt to connect the iPhone to iTunes.
3. Connect your iPhone to its USB sync cable.
4. iTunes should launch. If it doesn’t launch it manually.
5. Perform a restore of your iPhone’s firmware, settings, apps and media.
If the above fixes don’t help with your OS 3.1 issue, consider following the Apple iPhone Troubleshooting Assistant before investing your time in calling AppleCare or visiting the local Genius Bar.
Tell us about your iPhone OS 3.1 upgrade problems in the comments.

Below we present a selection of some of the most bizarre adverts, requests and personals listed on the site – from the elderly woman looking for a lodger to live in her bathroom, to the man selling 1,300 Pope hats.
While some were undoubtedly posted as pranks, they still reflect the spirit of a website that proudly keeps itself open to all internet life.
 20 Most Bizarre Craigslist Adverts
1) Ralph Nader chair
“Yes, that’s right. Ralph Nader, perennial Green Party candidate for the U.S. presidency MAY have sat in this very chair! It was used in his Washington, DC campaign headquarters until I purchased it on Craiglist several months ago. It has a nice red, commie upholstery and a sleek black plastic backing. The wheels don’t function well, but that is a small price to pay for state control of the means of production.”
2) I want some orange juice
“I’ll give you $2 + cost if you’ll deliver me some orange juice with receipt. I’m too lazy to get it myself. I live right by University Drive in Elon. Thank you.”
3) Seeking adult drunk clown for 30th birthday party
“We need an Adult Drunk Clown who is good at getting drunk and stupid. No need to do any clown tricks, just hang out and drink a shit load. We will be hopping around to different bars and want a clown to tag a long and drink heavely. He doesn’t even need to socialize with anyone, just drink.”
4) Duck mask
“Full head rubber mask, old, has discoloration on white feather part from age, storage. Hey I got it on my big head, so it works that way.”
 Dr Cell Phone Helps Everyone
5) Woman to sit in my bath tub full of noodles, wearing a bathing suit
“I will pay you $1 to sit in my bathtub full of noodles while you wear a one piece bathing suit. I will not be home, nor will anyone else while you do this. I will leave the key for you, and you will sit at your leisure. DO NOT bring any sauce. I will season the pasta after I return home prior to dinner.”
6) Wanted: Pony
“My kid is having a birthday coming up soon, and there’ll be a lot of children around, so I figured I’d better get a pony. If you do have a pony you could sell, please contact me, and then immediately start putting barbeque sauce in it’s bedding or add some Lawry’s to it’s salt lick – I like to marinade it early and long, so that the flavor is at it’s peak by the time I take possession.”
7) I have a huge bathroom
“I am a female in my mid 60’s and I am looking for a room mate. Times are tight and I need some extra money. I am willing to rent out my bathroom in my 1 bedroom east village home. My bathroom is large. You can easily put a twin air mattress in there. I only ask that when I need to use the bathroom, you or your air mattress are not in it. I do ask that when you are in the apartment, you confine yourself to the bathroom. I do not feel comfortable with a stranger walking around my living room. This might change as I get to know you better.”
Pope hats
“Because of this terrible economy, I’m having to shut down my business. I have OVER 1300 Pope hats (replicas) that I REALLY need to get rid of. The pope hats came from China and are a little too small for most adult heads and are also irritating to the skin, so you would need to have long hair or wear a smaller hat underneath (just like the REAL POPE). Dogs do not like to wear these pope hats, but maybe a large cat or maybe a nice dog would wear one.”
9) Need someone to hide easter eggs in my apartment when im not home
“I need someone to hide easter eggs in my apt when i am not there ! They are small and filled with candy! I would like to find them myself on sunday! I am willing to pay! Serious inquiries only!”
10) Free couch, if you can bend time and/or space
“I have a free couch for anyone who can get it back out of my room. It’s a comfy couch, cool stripe velvet in great shape, impossibly uncomfortable sleeper, but otherwise easily worth $50-75 bucks in Craigslist land. So why am I listing in for free? Because I am pretty sure it is physically impossible to remove this thing from my second story bedroom down the narrow hallway, down the narrower staircase and out the front door of my little Victorian duplex.”
11) I took your purse and felt a connection
“Tuesday night around 11:30. On 53rd btw 1st and 2nd. You came out of the subway and I followed you. You looked over your shoulder, saw me and started walking faster. I ran up, grabbed your arm, took your purse and ran away. I’ve done many a snatch-and-grab but no one has ever stuck in my mind like you. There was a quick moment when our eyes met that I felt something strong. I think you felt it too. If I wasn’t so shy (or so committing a crime) I would have asked your name. I, of course, later got your name from your drivers license. So Jennifer if you’d like to get together for a drink sometime get back to me.”
12) Looking for bridesmaids
“So, my fiancee and I are getting married in June. He has 8 groomsmen lined up and I only have one bridesmaid. So, I need some girls who are attractive and around my age to stand up in my wedding. You can be single or taken. It doesn’t matter….you just have to be hot. But, not hotter then me. Email me for more information. The wedding will be in Madison and you won’t have to pay for a thing.”
13) Do you have a small, incontinent dog?
“Or perhaps you work for a small dog rescue of some sort. Either way, I have a package of small doggy diapers. I don’t want to throw them out coz they are pretty expensive. (as someone with a small, incontnent dog would already know). Please don’t try to put them on a cat. It won’t work. Trust me.”
14) My teeth
“I left my Dentures in your Silverado last night. I gave you my number but did not get yours. Please call me asap. I need my teeth. We met in the parking lot of Margarita Jones. Get back to me asap please. Thank you.”
15) Disgruntled American seeks Canadian for political asylum, maybe more
“Are you a lonely, possibly desperate Canadian woman aged 18-50? Tired of trying to find a good man among your flannel clad, Labatt’s drinking, moose hunting country men? Willing to take in an American who is fed up with his country? Then I’m the guy for you! Maybe you’re a bit overweight or suffer from “Lifelong Ugly Duckling” syndrome. I don’t care.”
16) Autographed copy of Plato’s Republic
“1st edition of The Republic signed by its author. There is of course a reasonable amount of wear and tear, (light highlighting and underlining, dog-eared pages, back cover missing, etc.), but it is in overall good condition considering its age.”
17) Ferocious attack kitten
“This destructive kitty has been trained as a proud warrior and will fiercely defend your house, even against you. Has a very soft and furry belly, like a teddy bear – however he will bite your face if you try to touch it. For the love of God, someone please take this thing out of my house.”
Keep your Cell Phone Away From Her
18) Free – international ketchup packet collection
“This is a collection of ketchup packets from around the world. approximately 25 countries are represented here, including japan, finland, estonia, greenland, brazil, and portugal. none of the packets have been opened and they are labeled with their home country. Collection comes in decorative box with ducks on it.”
19) Personal texting assistant
“I get 40 – 50 texts an hour, I cant handle my workload plus texting responsibilities. My phone gets too full and needs deleted every couple hours. This is a full time position and you must be where ever I am at, because my phone is always with me. Serious inquiries only.”
20) 300 stuffed penguins
“I’m going through a pretty weird time in my life right now–having just gone through a break-up and graduated college and temporarily living in my parents’ house before I move out for good in in the fall, though I remain unemployed because my philosophy degree is at *such* a premium–and sifting through my room (which has become a strange amalgam of my adolescence and burgeoning adulthood), it’s been brought to my attention that I probably won’t “catch a man” or have anyone believe I’m about to turn 23 with 300 penguins and a bunch of purple furniture around, that looking at my current room one might think some sort of 13-year-old with developmental issues is living here.”

 iTwinge Keyboard for iPhone
Here’s what my dictionary says about the word “twinge”: a sudden, sharp localized pain; a brief experience of an emotion, typically an unpleasant one. Putting the letter “i” in front of that doesn’t change much.
The iTwinge is an external, add-on keyboard for the iPhone. The bulky sheath slides onto the phone’s slim body and turns it into a beast which resembles the 1984 Psion Organizer. Once there (and remember, you’ll have to slide it on every time you want to type something, and off again when you want to use the lower part of the screen to, you know, see something), you can use good, old-fashioned hard keys to type.
How does it work? The company behind the iTwinge, Mobile Mechatronics, is being a little cagey, and won’t reveal the keyboard’s inner workings until November 12th (the ship date). We do know that the the iTwinge ” uses the phones power”, and that you need to “plug it in”, but it appears that it simply translates your key presses via a capacitive module directly to the screen.
A mystery for sure. In fact, we can’t shake the feeling that this is a hoax, and an ugly one at that. $30, for iPhones 3G and 3GS.

iTunes’ Genius feature in iPhone OS 3.1 makes it easier to find music you might not otherwise stumble across, and now that feature is available for iPhone and iPod touch applications, too. You won’t however, find Genius app recommendations in iTunes. That’s tucked away in your iPhone or iPod touch.
To enable Genius for the App Store, whip out your iPhone or iPod touch and do this:
- Tap App Store
- Tap Featured
- Tap Genius

Genius is hiding in the Featured section in the App Store app

Genius is disabled by default
- Enter your iTunes Store account password
- Agree to the Terms of Service

As always, you have to agree to Apple’s Terms and Conditions
The App Store will start building a list of applications you might be interested in based on the Apps you have already downloaded. You can remove applications from the list by swiping them, just like deleting email messages in the Mail app.

The App Store tells you Genius is active (left) and later starts displaying suggestions (right)
The Genius feature is an easy way to find apps you might be interested in, and since it’s on your handheld, you can check out different applications on the go. Unfortunately, you can’t use the Genius app feature in iTunes. Hopefully Apple will add that feature to our computers soon.
