Specifications and Repair Options For the Sprint EVO 4G

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

Sprint’s EVO 4G smartphone is set to launch on June 4th, and we’re gearing up to help service what promises to be one of the most popular smartphones – even rivaling the iPhone.  One of the most exciting features?  Access to Spring 4G coverage for EVO users in 27 cities around the country (and slated access to Miami, St. Louis, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Salt Lake City, New York City, Houston, Boston, Washington, D.C., Kansas City, Denver, Minneapolis, and the San Francisco Bay Area by the end of the year).

But access to Sprint’s 4G network doesn’t come close to describing the EVO’s best features.  Specifications for the Sprint HTC EVO 4G include:

•          Android 2.1 with HTC Sense 2.5 experience

•          1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor

•          8 megapixel camera with dual LED flash for crisp, detailed images and support for 720p video capture

•          Front facing 1.3 megapixel camera for video chat with Qik application

•          4.3 inch WVGA (480×800) capacitive touch display

•          Dedicated, touch-sensitive Home, Menu, Back and Search areas

•          Proximity sensor, light sensor and digital compass

•          Integrated GPS

•          Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g)

•          Bluetooth 2.1

•          FM radio

•          3.5 mm headset jack

•          microSD card slot with included 8GB card

•          Integrated WiMAX radio for 4G access and WiFi Hotspot capability

•          Loaded Sprint apps, including Sprint Navigation, Sprint TV, Sprint Football, and NASCAR Mobile

•          Friend Stream for unified Flickr, Facebook and Twitter updates

•          Leap view for quick access to all seven home screen panels

•          Dimensions: 4.8 x 2.6 x 0.5 inches and 6 ounces

As Matthew Miller points out in his review of the Sprint HTC EVO 4G on ZDnet, the phone has amazing specs that other phones can’t touch:  the EVO has a larger screen, 8 megapixel camera, and better video camera than its closest competitor, the newly-released HTC Droid Incredible.  Sprint’s HTC EVO runs on the latest Google Android 2.1 OS – the latest Android operating system to date — among other cool HTC EVO features that we’ve previously covered.

And the EVO’s “FriendStream” is one of the most user-friendly aspects of the phone for social networking:  a unified interface shows updates and allows users easy access to Facebook, Flickr, and Twitter.  Look for a similar features from phones in the near future, as manufacturer’s aim to please our social networking infatuation.

The Sprint HTC EVO will be available at Radio Shack and Best Buy.  Price tag:  $199, with a $100 mail-in rebate and a 2-year voice and data contract.  Activating the phone’s WiFi HotSpot functionality (which allows you to turn your phone into a WiFi HotSpot for up to 8 other users) will run you around $29.99 a month, and access to unlimited 4G and 3G data will cost an extra $10 a month on Sprint.  Expect to see a run on this phone – the Sprint HTC EVO is definitely one of the most anticipated phones of 2010.

We’re excited to see the Sprint HTC EVO launch next week, and as always we’re keeping on top of the latest developments:  Dr. Cell Phone plans to offer repair services for the Sprint HTC EVO beginning on June 4th, 2010 for both walk in customers at any of our repair centers, as well as mail-in repairs for nationwide customers.

Verizon iPhone Release Date and iPhone 4G 4.0 in June 2010

Monday, May 17th, 2010

The Verizon iPhone Release Date rumors are spreading rapidly across the web. One Wall Street analyst estimates that Apple will launch a CDMA phone that will work on the Verizon Wireless network this year. Apple and AT&T originally signed a contract that would allow AT&T to be the only provider for the iPhone until 2012, so if Apple finds a way to cancel that or negotiate something with AT&T then we may see a Verizon iPhone.

Verizon iPhone coming soon

Verizon iPhone coming soon

The iPhone 4G with iPhone 4.0 software is launching in June 2010. We know that it’s real, and most of the features of it have been leaked online. Apple will announce it during the World Wide Developers Conference. The most noticeable feature about the iPhone 4G is the front facing web camera for video chat and the metallic volume/mute buttons.

As always Dr. Cell Phone will be the very first company to provide you all the repair services ranging from Cracked Screen Repair, Broken LCD Repair to some of the intricate hardware failures.

If Verizon really does launch an iPhone on their network, Apple will get a HUGE amount of new iPhone users. The CEO of Verizon has already expressed interest in wanting to offer the iPhone, so it’s now up to Apple to decide whether or not they want to offer the new iPhone 4G on Verizon.

iPad’s Screen Cracking Far Less Than iPhone’s So Far

Monday, May 10th, 2010

Apple’s iPad should be a repair magnet. After all, the tablet computer is covered with a glass plate and is large and heavy enough (1.5 lbs) to easily slip out of a one-handed grasp. In fact, the iPad would seem to be the most fragile–yet popular–gadget on sale right now.

Repair shops, however, say they are getting few damaged iPads–much fewer than the many broken iPhones they see daily. Ryan Arter, the president of Kansas-based Mission:Repair, has seen one iPad so far. The device had been dropped and had a broken interior liquid crystal display (LCD) screen, though its outer glass layer was intact. The result: half the screen was greyed-out or obstructed by static (see photo above). Arter’s staff designed a jig that stabilized the iPad so the glass could be removed and replaced. Afterwards, the device “worked perfectly,” says Arter.

Asif Noorani, the founder of Dr. Cell Phone, a chain of repair shops in Texas, has also seen one iPad. This one, too, had a cracked screen. Noorani’s company charges around $250 to fix iPads, about the same price as repairing a MacBook.

Some iPad owners may be patching up their devices themselves. Repair company iFixit, which aims to be an online hub for repair guides, recently posted a service manual for the Wi-Fi version of the iPad on its site. The document gives step-by-step instructions on how to remove the LCD, replace the battery and other tasks. A manual for the 3G iPad is also in the works.

Equipped with these guides, savvy consumers should be able to fix their iPads at home, says iFixit co-founder Kyle Wiens. “We opened the iPad 12 different ways to find the simplest method,” says Wiens. “Our conclusion was, ‘Yes, we can make this easy for people to do.”

Do-it-yourself repairs aren’t risk-free, of course. It’s easy to break the plastic tabs that surround the iPad’s glass edges, for instance. To solve that problem, iFixit has commissioned replacement tabs and will include them with any iPad part it sells, says Wiens.

Apple offers a complimentary one-year warranty for the iPad, as well as extended coverage–for $99–that provides repair or replacement service for two years from the original purchase date. These plans do not cover damage caused by accidents or “normal wear and tear,” however.

Is the iPad destined to be a popular repair product like the iPhone? Noorani points out that the number of iPad owners is still small compared to the tens of millions of iPhone users. Wiens notes that the glass in the iPad is a little thicker (1.18 mm) than that in the iPhone (1.02 mm), making it more resistant to breakage.

iPads are also getting extra protection from the many cases and screen protectors on the market. Apple sells a $39 case with a “soft microfiber interior and reinforced panels to provide structure”. Other companies have crafted cases out of silicone, wood and hard polycarbonate.

Despite the slow start, Arter believes the iPad will be a “big product” for Mission:Repair. “The fact that it’s glass and relatively big and thin means there will be a lot of damaged devices,” he says.

T-Mobile to release new myTouch Android phone

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010

The latest Android flavor of the week is the Droid Incredible from HTC.

But T-Mobile wants you to keep an eye out for its myTouch line, which gets a robust update in the myTouch 3G Slide. This new landscape slider, which comes out in June, takes a lot of the best attributes of HTC’s Sense user interface and builds another layer on top.

It creates an even more polished experience, with added touches from T-Mobile that make the phone more social and helpful for users than its predecessor.

The main improvements include a Faves Gallery for up to 20 of your favorite people. This specialized contacts application lets you see all your communications with your favorite people and prioritizes your updates from those people. For instance, your phone will flash a green light when one of your Faves contacts communicates with you.

There’s a Genius Button that lets you activate voice commands for making calls, composing texts and e-mails, conducting Web searches or launching applications. The feature will also read incoming text messages.

And finally, there’s myModes, which builds off the Sense interface themes. Themes allow you to customize your interface for different occasions, say for work, evenings and weekends. MyModes automates the switching between themes based on the time of day or your location. So it can switch from work mode to home mode when you leave the office or hit a certain point in the day.

MyTouch 3G Slide also has full Microsoft Exchange support as well as the ability to run seven panes from the home screen.

The phone also boasts a full slide-out keyboard without adding much bulk to the body. The camera gets an upgrade to 5 megapixels and the screen is bumped up to 3.4 inches. It will run Android 2.1, which includes free turn-by-turn navigation.

This adds momentum to the fast-growing Android platform. We’re still waiting for Apple’s fourth-generation iPhone, expected to be released in June, but the well of Android competition keeps getting deeper.

With the release of two new highly sophisticated touch screen phones  HTC myTouch and HTC Incredible, Repair services at Dr. Cell Phone continue to help people who remain uncovered from the manufacturer warranty.  Dr. Cell Phone provides the most affordable HTC Repairs for both walk-in customers in Dallas, Plano, Frisco, McKinney, Allen, Fort worth and Houston TX and Mail-in customers from all across the united states.

The iPad 3G: Is the extra $130 worth it?

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

Apple’s newest iPad, the 3G-equipped model that arrived Friday, is identical to the earlier Wi-Fi-only model, save for a plastic black strip running along the top of the device — for 3G reception — and a SIM card slot on the lower left side. Otherwise, the iPad 3G offers the same features as the model that arrived April 3: same solid design and construction, same bright and sharp 9.7-inch screen, same battery life.

Other than weighing a tenth of a pound more (1.6 pounds instead of 1.5), the big difference is that you can now take online access pretty much wherever you go — as long as there’s an AT&T 3G network nearby and you’re willing to pay an extra $130 (plus a monthly fee) for the privilege.

Where the Wi-Fi models cost $499, $599 or $699, depending on how much storage you get — 16GB, 32GB or 64GB, respectively — the iPad 3G starts at $629 and jumps up in $100 increments from there. The top-of-the-line model goes for $829.

The question iPad buyers have to consider is simple: Is the extra $130 worth it?
