Here is a comprehensive troubleshooting guide for HTC G1 charging and Power Problems, for all the HTC G1 users who have problem charging their phone or have trouble holding charge on their phone. As you proceed with the basic diagnostic on your HTC G1, you will narrow down the problem to the exact issue. After you figure out the issue, you can try to fix it yourself but we do not recommend you taking apart the phone as that would void the warranty and could worsen the problem as well. We would recommend you arrange your phone to be fixed by one of the Dr. Cell Phone’s highly experienced Technicians.

HTC G1 Repair and Diagnostic at Dr. Cell Phone
Device will not power on
1.Inspect device & battery for signs of physical /liquid damage. If found, warranty is void.
2.Press & hold the Power key for 3 seconds to verify that the device will not turn on.
3.Check the USB Port for any bent or misshapen PIN’s.
If found, that is considered physical damage not covered under the Warranty.
4.Remove battery and inspect contacts.
Remove any debris/residue found on the device or battery contacts with a soft, dry cloth.
Look closely at the battery contacts on the phone to see if they are bent out of shape.
If some are found, that is the most likely cause and this is considered physical damage not covered under the Warranty.
5.Verify OEM Battery and Charger are being used.
Aftermarket batteries/chargers can damage the device and voice the warranty.
6.Attempt to charge the device/battery.
Charging is indicated by a solid amber light in the Notification LED. As the battery is being charged while the phone is on, the charging battery icon is displayed in the status bar of the Home screen. After the battery has been fully charged, the LED shows a solid green light and a full battery icon displays in the status bar of the Home screen.
7.If the device status light does not stay solid Amber or solid Green when the device is plugged in, try the following:
Plug the charger into a different power outlet.
Try a different device charger.
Try a different battery.
8.After the battery is fully charged, attempt to Power the device on again.
If the issue persists, perform a Hard Reset using the hardware buttons.
9.After the battery is fully charged, attempt to turn on the device again.
If the issue still remains, the device can now be considered for an Exchange.
10.If LED doesn’t light up when charger is plugged in (both the device and power source), perform a Soft Reset (while still attached to charger and power source).
11.If LED doesn’t light up, perform a Hard Reset the device.
If the device powers up after Hard Reset, test the unit for a few days. If issue returns, try another battery and if that doesn’t resolve the issue device can be considered for an Exchange as long as there is no physical or liquid damage.
12.If device shows charging with one (AC Charger or USB) and not the other or one power source over another, issue is with the accessory or Power Source.
Replace accessory and/or use another Power Source.
13.If device will only power up when attached to charger (AC or USB) it is likely the battery needs to be replaced
Device wont hold a charge
1.Verify you are are using:
OEM AC Charger
OEM USB Data Cable
OEM Battery
2.Fully charge the battery using the OEM AC Charger
USB and car chargers are trickle chargers meant to get the user through until they can get to their AC Charger.
If the device is not lasting the advertised Talk time, with minimal use, have the customer try another OEM battery in the device.
If the battery life still is not meeting the advertised Talk time (with minimal use), the device can then be considered for repair/replacement.
Handset Powers off
1.Ensure the device is actually powering off and not just in hibernate mode by pressing the Menu button once.
If screen comes back on, continue.
2.Check the battery level: Home Screen>Menu>Settings>About Phone>Status.
Charge should be no lower than 10%; if it is, charge the device and retest.
3.Try another OEM battery in the device.
If device stays powered on with a different battery, the issue is with the accessory.
If device still powers off with another battery, Hard Reset the device and retest.
4.If the issue remains after the Hard Reset, the device it can then be considered for repair/replacement.
Battery Life Conservation
1.Charge the device using the supplied AC charger whenever possible.

6.Turn off your device connection to GPS satellites when not in use.

To turn off automatic synchronization, follow these steps:
From the Home Screen press the Menu key.
Select Settings>Data synchronization.

9.Third-party applications may also drain the battery quicker. If battery life diminishes significantly after installing applications from the Market, perform the following to determine the application causing the problem:
Open Market.
Touch My Downloads.
Scroll through and review your installed applications for the following information:
Low ratings (1 or 2 stars)
Comments indicating battery issues
Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, or network access
Note: Tap Security Permissions to see the application’s current access.
If your battery drains quickly, it is highly recommended to uninstall the application.
Device gets warm while charging
When using the device for prolonged periods of time, such as when you’re talking on the phone, charging the battery or browsing the web, the device may become warm. In most cases, this condition is normal and therefore should not be interpreted as a problem with the device.
The devices have a protection feature that if the device becomes too warm (due to use of GPS while charging, BT while charging, using the device as a wireless modem, etc), the auto protection feature will be triggered and the charging process will be stopped. Once the device cools down, the device will then begin charging again.

Hey, how is it going? fantastic stuff. When I store my HD I always use my battery tender. It has saved the life of my battery, in fact I have not changed my battery in six years and my ride starts at a moments notice. Just a trickle charger is not enough you need to use the tecnology of the battery tender.
